Observations

  • “When he was young, he used to line up his stuffed animals on the bed and give them their medications.”
  • “Much to the consternation of her friends with other interests, she used to make up lessons and give them homework to do.”
  • “She just wanted to be the line leader.”
  • “He was always creative, sometimes to a fault. Finally, I just let him have a wall to draw on at will. I told myself I would paint over it when he was older, but I never did. It was my favorite room in the house.”
  • “I had to hold my laughter when I asked him why he was sent to the hallway, and he said it was because he got to go out there and no one else did. I hear he went on to do a lot of adventures that no one else did.”
  • “He used to spend hours playing video games. We thought he was just wasting time.”
  • “She always liked taking things apart to see how they worked.”
  • “When she was in first grade, her favorite cereal was Alpha-Bits.”

Meet the veterinarian, the teacher, the business leader, the artist, the skydiver, the video game creator, the engineer, and the writer.

It is fascinating how each person is designed with innate strengths that can be evident, if observed carefully, at a very young age.

Think back to when you were young.

  • What activities were of interest to you?
  • Did you like working with people, ideas, processes, or things?
  • Did you enjoy being around people, or did you prefer a more quiet, solitary setting?
  • What did you get in trouble for at times?

These are just some of the questions that can help you explore your strengths. Here’s the thing: who you are at the core may adapt as you go through life, but you will find consistent patterns.

Why is this important?

As leaders, it is important to know our strengths so that we can serve others using those strengths. It is also important for another reason, and that is so we can help the generations coming behind us to discover theirs as well.

A Sense of Purpose

Most people, whether they admit it or not, are seeking to find a sense of belonging and purpose. Many will go down dangerous paths in pursuit of this, while others seem to have “always known.” Still others meander a while – maybe even decades – simply because no one has helped them see their strengths.

What if leaders became “seekers of strengths”?

Think about it.

What if you trained yourself to observe the strengths of others and help them find their way into working in those strengths?

Having done this for decades now, I can tell you that there is no greater reward than seeing someone learn their strengths and apply them in service to others.

  • Do you know your strengths?
  • Do your team members know theirs?
  • Do your students know their strengths?
  • Do your children know their strengths?
