This marks the halfway point of the year and a time for leaders everywhere to reflect and reset. It could very well be that the path you set at the beginning of the year needs at least a little recalibration at this point.
Rest assured, this is normal.
When it comes to your personal and professional goals, this is the perfect time to ask yourself a few questions and to refine your plans for the rest of the year. If you’re struggling, this gives you time to pull out of the dive. If you’re doing well, this is a great time to assess the success so you can continue it forward.
This is not the time to say, “Well, that habit didn’t stick; so, I will start again next year.” Or, “Profit is lagging, so we will just hope for a better year next year.”
No, this is a time to review your goals, reset your compass, and take action.
“When obstacles arise, you change your direction to reach your goal;
you do not change your decision to get there.”
― Zig Ziglar
How can you reset?
Rest
Give yourself and your team time to rest in preparation for the second half push. This may mean honoring vacation time without requiring someone to be on call or allowing extra time for administrative and organizing tasks. It may mean that you, personally, take time to do something you enjoy outside of work.
Evaluate
Are the goals you set at the beginning of the year still relevant? Do they need to shift, change, or be tabled? Customer needs, circumstances, and better opportunities may necessitate some re-tooling of the goals you set. And this is fine if it is done with intention, focus, and strategy.
Schedule
Having goals is one thing, even ones that are stretch goals. But there is also reality. Do you have the team and tools you need to reach those goals in the time allotted? If not, planning now for the rest of the year helps you know if you need to adjust the goals or bring on more people and systems to make them happen.
Engage
Setting goals, milestones, and timelines are all important. But you must also be intentional about engaging with your team and, personally, with those who are important in your life. Communicate with them. Learn what they are seeing and what is important to them. Get to know your people well enough that you know their strengths, and seek to set them up for success in the coming months. Be considerate of their time as you plan around holidays.
Take Action
Rest, reflection, and re-connecting with people restore balance. This creates the energy you and your team need. The only thing left is to take action. Take the first step toward your goal, however small that step may be. This generates momentum. Then take the next step. And don’t forget to celebrate milestones and the small wins. The small wins keep that momentum going.
It is the mid-point. You have time to make this a winning year in your life and business if you just RESET with intention.
