Maybe you’ve been there.
It is the first quarter. Your team starts well, then, very quickly, they lose momentum.
It continues into the second quarter, and, by now, the scoreboard is flashing humiliating results for all to see. The esprit de corps is out the door.
Finally, almost mercifully, half-time arrives.
Here is the key: a half-time reset can result in a second half comeback.
Now apply this to your goals, both personally and professionally.
- Did you start out well, only to lose momentum?
- Did your plans get sidelined?
- Did you or your team run a wrong play?
- Did you run into an obstacle that was bigger than anticipated?
- Did you lose a key player?
- Did you run out of energy?
Now is the perfect time for your half-time reset.
Your Half-time Reset
Here at mid-year is the perfect time to take a break, reset, recharge, and reflect. If you are thinking, “I don’t have time for this. I have so much to do!” this is exactly what you need.
Physical
Leaders and their teams all need time away to recharge physically. It can be as short as a walk around the block, or it could be a restful vacation away from your normal “game of life”. If the best athletes in the world need a break to attend to physical needs, you certainly do!
Mental
A sport is just as much a mental game as a physical one. You have seen this in action. Your favorite team has well-conditioned athletes, but they can still lose if their “head is not in the game” and they end up “beating themselves”.
In business, you or your team members may be dealing with mental fatigue. This can result from lack of confidence, responsibility overload, outside concerns, or the piling on of loose ends that inevitably happens at the end of each quarter.
This is why a half-time reset is important. It is your chance to stop and capture all those thoughts bouncing around in your mind – you know, those things that keep you up at night. Literally, stop and capture them in writing. Clearing your mind in this way will help you move forward with a clearer vision.
Social
In addition to physical depletion and mental fragmentation, you will also find frayed edges socially. You and your team may have had miscommunications, or you may find you have been so focused on work that you have allowed your social connections to wither.
Take some time to reset your relationships at work, at home, and in your community. As a society in a post-COVID world, this reset is more important than ever. Re-establish your connections with the people you value most and make new connections as well.
Game Plan Review
Physically refreshed, mentally clear, and socially connected, you are now ready to review the game plan.
This is where you review the plan and the scoreboard to determine how to move forward.
- What worked well? And, just as importantly, what did not work well?
- Think about the priorities you established for the year. Are you on track or off track? Do the things that are off track still matter?
- Are there new and better opportunities you need to pursue?
- What do you and your team need to do to create a successful second half?
- And, finally, what changes do you need to make to your game plan in order to win?
Values
You can’t go back in the game without the proverbial high five huddle. This is where you center back on who you are and why you are here. It is where you come together as one team determined to finish well.
Take some time to do a half-time reset now and then have a great and very successful second half comeback. We’ll be cheering for you!
