December 2019 now seems like eons ago. Little did anyone know that it would represent the end of an era and usher in a period of revolutionary change across the world that continues to this day.

It was during December 2019 that John Maxwell recorded a podcast where he shared his seven-step Year in Review process.

On that podcast, he shared these words of wisdom:

“Great coaches are off-the-charts great at making halftime adjustments.”

Good Coaches Start Out with a Game Plan

As he notes on the podcast, every good coach starts out with a game plan. The problem is what happens when the game begins. There are surprises and unpredictable plays. Great coaches spend the first half of a game observing closely. And at halftime, they make adjustments so their team can get back in the game and win.

Great Coaches Make Halftime Adjustments

At the beginning of 2020, many of us had game plans. We spent the first half watching as the surprises and unpredictable events upended those plans. The great leaders, like great coaches, made adjustments at halftime.

Because of past years, 2022 brings with it a palpable degree of uncertainty and, for many, concern. It is timely to go back to December 2019 and listen to this podcast. It applies just as much now as it ever has and perhaps even more so.

Be a great leader. Reflect, review, and readjust for the new year. Go in with a game plan and observe as you go. Know that the plan you make will require adjustment but make the plan anyway. Having a plan and adjusting that plan will help you and your team to win.
