It happens quite frequently in the workplace. An “A” player gets recognized for their efforts to a point where the company offers the star employee a leadership role. The logic is sound. If someone is excellent at what they do, then have them lead a team of others to replicate that success.
Only, it doesn’t always work according to logic.
There is a much bigger factor than logic at play, and it is the people factor.
Whereas someone may have been task-focused in their work before, they now have to make a Leadershift to become much more people-focused.
- Where they once did the work, they now must train, motivate, and develop others to do the work.
- Where they were responsible for their own productivity, they are now accountable for the results of others.
- Where they may have worked in silence, they now must major on open communication.
It is a major shift that is often cloaked simply as a “promotion.”
Are you preparing your “A” players for the role?
Are you, as an “A” player preparing to grow into an opportunity that may arise?
Here’s a great article on the subject.
