If you are around me very much, you know that one of my favorite D-wired words is “now”. We D’s think in giant steps – not the little detailed kind – but big steps with a sense of urgency.
If I’m providing instructions, I will say, “Now do this.”
And the next step starts also with, “Now do this.”
When do I want something done? Now, of course, though I have learned to give a little grace on timing and provide a reasonable deadline.
But a story about the power of “now” hit home recently that applies to everyone, no matter your strengths style.
It was the recollection of a hospice worker who was for many years the proverbial “fly on the wall” as loved ones said their last goodbyes. She recognized that the conversations were almost always centered on these statements.
- “I thought we would have more time.”
- “I hope you knew…”
- “I don’t know what I will do without you.”
- “I’m sorry. I should have called (or visited) more.”
The point is this:
- NOW, you have time. Make the most of every day.
- NOW, you can tell someone what you want them to know.
- NOW, you can tell them how important they are to you.
- NOW, you can call or visit.
This is the power of NOW.
Great leaders recognize this power.
- They plan NOW.
- They make decisions NOW.
- They connect with others NOW.
- They have the important conversations NOW.
- They express gratitude NOW.
- They take action NOW.
You don’t have to wait for permission.
Many people hesitate, as if seeking permission to lead and live the life they desire. Or they overthink all the possibilities until they fall prey to analysis paralysis. Or they allow life’s distractions to keep them from doing the things they know they should and want to do.
Those who succeed are those who take at least one step NOW in the direction of doing the important things. And they do this every day with intention.
So, ask yourself, is there something you need or want to do? Is there a relationship you need to protect? Is there a dream or a goal you want to achieve?
Then, ask yourself what you can do NOW to take your first step in that direction.
The difference between regretful and remarkable can be summed up in one little three-letter word: NOW.
