In a relatively small slice of history, the world has undergone a rapid progression of transportation. Think about it. For centuries, mankind’s travel was limited to the distance one could travel on foot, by horse or wheeled cart, or by boat.
Then came the expansion and industrial revolution eras. Mankind’s world quickly expanded as people were able to travel by railroad, cars, ships, planes, and, ultimately, rockets – all over the earth and now beyond the moon.
It begs the question: Who invented transportation?
The same is true for communication. From stone tablets to digital devices, communication has both expanded in scope and increased in speed. From stone to paper to wire to wireless, these advancements have connected the world.
And, again, it begs the question: Who invented these means of communication?
Think about power, the unseen force that enables manufacturing, moves goods, runs appliances, lights homes and offices, heats and cools, cooks food, cleans clothes, charges the myriads of modern devices, and pretty much makes modern life function.
Who harnessed this power?
And then there are the arts – music, for example. A symphony is more than just music played from a sheet. It showcases the skill and tenacity of its current members, but also the craftsmanship of those who invented and built the instruments and the talent of those who composed the music.
Who created the art?
Was it one person?
The fact is, no one person did these things. All of them came about from teamwork and collaboration. They are the culmination of efforts and strengths applied across generations, each building upon the innovations of those who came before.
And, together, they have changed history.
“Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.” – Steve Jobs
What can you and your team do?
The need for teamwork and collaboration is still alive and well today. The innovations and solutions needed for the future will stem from today’s collaborative efforts.
What can you and your team do today to solve a problem or improve a process or product? It doesn’t have to be a major innovation. That may come later. But if your team can invent or build the next proverbial wheel, it may be the thing that enables the next generation to go beyond what is currently possible.
Every person plays a part. Imagine what could be done if each person worked in their strengths, together as a team.
