Today, I’d like to talk to you about a common malady. You likely have it right now…and are not even aware that you do.
The symptoms of this malady include:
- Sunday evening stomach pains – Triggered by thoughts of work on Monday.
- Partial paralysis – You hate your current job but don’t know what else to do. You cannot move forward. The condition seems to escalate when the alarm clock rings.
- Lethargy – You plug into your work and instead of being energized, you feel an immediate discharge.
- Halitosis – Every time you speak of work, bad things come out of your mouth.
- Chest pains – You are stressed so much that you ponder calling 9-1-1.
What is this mysterious malady?
I call it Strengths Blindness.
What is the cause?
Strengths Blindness stems from two sources: ignorance and insecurity.
Strengths Ignorance
You may be ignorant of your strengths – you simply don’t know what they are. It’s not that you’re not smart – you certainly are. It’s just that no one has helped you properly assess your strengths. You cannot see them for yourself, and that is very common. Most of us can see the strengths of others but cannot see our own.
How to know if this is you:
Think of three successful people you know and fill in these blanks:
________ is a great ___________.
(Examples might include negotiator, planner, teacher, leader, or artist.)
________ is a great ___________.
________ is a great ___________.
And now for the hard one…
I am a great _________________.
If you honestly can’t fill in that blank, your Strengths Blindness is based on simply not knowing. We have a great prescription for you here.
Strengths Insecurity
Now maybe you DO know your strengths. You’ve taken the assessment and perhaps have even gone through one of our programs…but you still suffer the symptoms listed above.
This is an indicator, usually, of a security issue: you know your strengths, but lack the security to act on them.
This is more common than you may realize. In fact, as driven as I am by personality, I still have those times of doubt and insecurity. Having your own business makes you face those fears and push forward. Determination, a good dose of support from others, and active application of your strengths will help push past the insecurities.
The Cure
The fact is, you don’t have to do work that makes you sick. Employers or clients will actually pay you to do the work you love! Even better, they will usually pay you MORE to do what you love.
Why?
Because when you love doing something that is a strength for you, you will do it better than a job you hate. You’ll be more productive, more efficient, and get much better results. And what employer or client doesn’t want results?
