Strengths-Based Leadership: Victory Over the Voices

The Voices

“You’re too bossy. You need to slow down and be nicer to people.”

“You talk too much. Be quiet and pay attention.”

“You’re too slow and quiet. You need to speak up and move faster.”

“You’re too serious. You need to go outside and find some friends.”

When you see these statements in print, they seem harsh. And yet, these are the voices that reverberate in the minds of people everywhere. Somewhere in their past, they did hear statements like this.

The effect?

They think there is something wrong with them.

The solution?

It is often a diagnosis and a prescription.

The Validation

But what if each of these people were just being themselves, the way they were wired? What if these observed traits were really strengths in development? And what if parents, teachers, and leaders across all avenues could channel these traits into positive applications?

Think about it.

These people would grow up to do great things, first, because they would not be convinced there was something wrong with them; and second, because they would learn to build on their strengths, not fight against them.

What happens when a person stops fighting their strengths and, instead, learns to develop them?

  1. The D-wired person turns “bossy” into leadership that serves people and cares deeply.
  2. The I-wired person embraces the ability to connect with people and develop ideas into loving relationships and careers of influence.
  3. The S-wired person finds peace in knowing that their smooth operation and quiet voice bring harmony to a frenzied world.
  4. The C-wired person realizes their unique ability to reason and solve problems serves their fellow humans, and, very often, in big ways.

The Victory

How can you help your people gain victory over the voices?

Great leaders can see in a person what that person cannot see, and to mine the gold that lies beneath the baggage they have carried through life.

You can do this by learning how a person is wired and then providing opportunities for growth within their strengths zone.

When you help a person see their strengths and apply them in service to others, you will see amazing results. But, beyond that, you will see transformation.

And that, my friends, is legacy leadership.
