Dialogue is an interesting word. It comes from the Greek “dia”, meaning “through”, and “logos”, meaning “word”.
- It is gathering information through words, like the function of a tech dialog box.
- It is sharing ideas through words or word pictures.
- It is helping through words of encouragement and support.
- It is resolving issues through words.
Think about those who have impacted your life.
How did they do it?
More than likely, it was through words.
Maybe they asked you a thought-provoking question that helped you clarify your vision. Perhaps they provided words of encouragement at a time when you needed them most. Maybe they gave wise counsel to guide you when you were facing a major decision. It could be they provided ideas when you couldn’t see beyond the next step. Maybe it was a teacher or coach who profoundly impacted the direction of your life, or an author whose book changed your trajectory.
The Power of Words
As leaders, it is important to think about dialog. How can you impact your world for good through your words?
Communication is key. It is listening and speaking together to develop new innovations, solve problems, lead, and grow.
My mentor, John C. Maxwell, is a master communicator and leader. His impact is massive and worldwide. And what does he use to lead more than any other thing? What are his tools of choice?
Words.
While you may not yet speak to thousands, or have a lifetime of literary works, you can begin to make an impact through your words.
Who can you help this week through your words?
- Can you give an employee a sincere thank you for a job well done?
- Do you know an entrepreneur who needs advice for working through a challenging phase of business?
- Can you provide wise guidance to a child based on your experience?
- Do you need to gather information to solve a problem?
- Can you help someone struggling with a decision by asking a thought-provoking question?
- Can you share ideas for growth and innovation?
- Do you need to tell your story?
