Leadership and Transition Points

This is the time of year when the end of the summer season meets the beginning of the most productive period of the year, and it is, by nature, chaotic. You are, no doubt, experiencing it, as is your team.

Families are squeezing in the last days of summer vacation, parents are getting children back into the routines of school, and businesses are ramping up for high productivity while also scrambling to finish the summer lineup of projects.

This affects you as a leader; and it also affects your team, this point where life and work fight to occupy the same crowded space at the same time.

How can you make the most of this period of overlapping responsibilities?

Anticipation

It happens every year. To deny its existence and operate full throttle, all-hands-on-deck will only serve to frustrate your team and, as a result, yourself. If you anticipate that it is going to happen, you can plan accordingly.

Reflection

You can maximize this time for what it is – a week or two of transition, where you and your team take the time to finish current projects and plan for the next round. It is a time to reflect and regroup, and as such, it has great value for the months ahead.

Restoration

This is the time to recharge your batteries and to allow your team to do the same. Savor these last few days of summer. Spend time with family and friends. And, yes, even leaders need to take a few days off now and then. Energy must be restored before it can be expended, and this is your chance to recharge.

Preparation

This is also a time to clear away the old, unfinished business of summer. If it can’t be completed or is no longer a priority, it is time to let it go. You can’t go into a season of high productivity bogged down with clutter from the previous season. Instead, clear away the clutter and go into the next season with clear focus on what you want to accomplish.

Celebration

As much as you are looking ahead, also take the time to look back on what you and your team have accomplished so far this year. It is likely more than you realize! Write it down. Take a moment to celebrate with your team.

Action Steps

  1. Take time to review the key points above.
  2. What have you and your team accomplished this year so far?
  3. What is your focus for the months ahead?
  4. What clutter do you need to release now in order to be ready for the upcoming season?
  5. What are you doing now to restore your energy and focus?
