A humble leader passed away in recent days as a result of COVID-19. You won’t read his name in the papers, but his life affected tens of thousands of people around the world.

As he was graduating from high school, with a full academic scholarship to West Point, he was called into the ministry. He followed that leading and ended up as a missionary. Together with his wife, they began to serve. For nearly 40 years, he served.

When one of the ladies in the ministry was tragically killed in a car accident, they took in her three children. From there, they took in others, until they had an established orphanage.

When his nephew, a recent graduate, came to visit, he said, “Before you go home, let’s go shopping. You will need a new suit for your job interviews.”

At his funeral, his nephew wore that suit, which he had, indeed, worn to job interviews and other special occasions through the years.

And there on the front row stood seven children, now grown.

Back on the mission field were many other children, being cared for and loved, and a congregation who loved him so much that they carried out his plans for reaching others to a point where they ministered to over 9,000 people as he was dying in the hospital.

John Maxwell talks about leadership and legacy. He talks about how the hallmark of a great leader is not in what they accomplish for themselves. It is in the value they add to others. It is their greater contribution to society as a whole and to the individuals within.

When it all comes down to it, leadership is “making a difference.”

As John says, the greatest endorsement a leader can receive is for people to say, “We’re better because of you.”

In a world where many leaders are asking, “What can you do for me?” the outstanding leaders are asking, “What can I do for you?”

Take a few minutes to watch this video with John Maxwell and be inspired to be a leader who adds value to others.
