In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, amidst unfathomable devastation, everyday heroes are emerging.
Emergency responders, operators, linemen, pilots, truck drivers, boat owners, engineers, medical professionals, and business owners have found ways to serve their communities. There is even a small business owner who has brought in his mules to help carry supplies to those in increasingly desperate need.
One son, intent on checking on his parents who were not responding to calls and texts, got into his truck to check on them. When he came upon roads that were impassable, he hiked 11 miles to reach them.
Beyond the local areas are outreach organizations, with leaders and volunteers stepping in to identify needs and fill whatever gaps they can.
This is strengths in action, where people bring their strengths and resources to help friends, neighbors, and even strangers.
We salute these everyday heroes who, when faced with a challenge, quickly tapped into their strengths and took the lead to serve.
In this are great lessons for all of us.
Knowing your strengths, honing your strengths, and working in your strengths isn’t just for you, so you can enjoy your work. Yes, that’s a big part of it. But these everyday heroes show us there is an even bigger purpose to bringing your strengths to the table.
And here’s the other lesson: every person’s strength matters.
You may think your small business has small impact. You may think your tools are limited. You may think you are but one person. But when the need arises, your strengths do, indeed, matter. One person truly can make a difference.
Be that person who taps into your strengths and takes the lead to serve, wherever you are, and whatever the need.
