Across the world, each country, culture, community, company, and family find cause to remember important hallmarks in their history and reasons to celebrate milestones. From birthday celebrations to memorial holidays, there is an innate need to capture these moments and recognize those who serve their fellow man.
The Grind
Without this intentional focus, day-to-day life and work can be a never-ending, grinding task list that takes but never gives.
Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy call this “The Gap and the Gain”. Especially in today’s world, it is easy to lose sight of how far you have come in the pursuit of how far you must go.
If you find yourself and those around you in a period of “The Grind”, it can be tempting to double down and work harder.
But sometimes, the answer is to pause and reflect.
The Shift
Stepping back briefly and regularly to see how far you have come changes perspective. It gives purpose and meaning to the work you do.
Shifting perspective changes this.
- When you visit a company’s lobby or website, you often see a timeline that indicates humble beginnings and highlights of growth and success.
- At graduations, you see snapshots of time, honoring the graduate’s highlights.
- At a holiday remembrance, you may hear a speaker like 98-year-old World War II veteran, David Yoho. He said, “We gave up our yesterdays for your tomorrows,” as he honored his fellow veterans and gave hope to future generations.
Employees worked at that company, clocking in and out, day after day, for years. Parents nurtured and trained their child for 18 years, with no days off. Students sat in classrooms, hour after hour, for over a decade. Soldiers fought battles in the harshest of elements, step after grueling step and mile after endless mile.
Why?
At the time, they did not realize the country, the company, and the life they were building. They could only see the next step. But now, as they look back, they can see the purpose and appreciate the significance.
The Celebration
It is important to celebrate the successes and significance you see in the rearview mirror.
Finding time to regularly show appreciation to those who serve with you helps them know they are connected to a bigger picture. And connection (or, rather, the lack thereof) is one of the biggest issues the world faces today. Human beings are designed for connection – to each other and to purpose.
Take time to stop, celebrate, and show appreciation. It is more important that you realize. Memorialize the moments that matter.
The power of looking back is that it propels you to move forward with renewed energy and dedication. And it gives a sense of purpose and belonging.
