“I want to start a business, but…how?”

“I don’t know what the next step is for me. I know I am here to serve others, but I don’t know what that looks like.”

“I have reached a respectable level in my business, but right now, I am overwhelmed with the responsibility of it. There are so many things to do!”

“I have been offered a new position in leadership, but, frankly, I have doubts as to whether I could do the job.”

Breaking Point

These are questions we explore with leaders all the time. At several points in life and business, we all reach points of overwhelm, indecision, fear, failure, lack of clarity, lack of confidence, or lack of direction.

Deep breath, my friend. This is normal.

And it is usually a sign that you are reaching the outer limits of your comfort zone and the extremities of your current limitations. But it also signals a transition point between where you are now and your next level.

Essentially, a breaking point can very well be your breakthrough point.

Breakthrough

Breakthroughs don’t just happen. They require effort, support, and additional resources in order to push through them. Think about it. If you already knew what to do and how to do it, it would not be a breaking point.

The good news is you don’t have to do it alone. This is where you rally your resources – your team and the tools you need to support you, help you grow, and hold you accountable for doing the necessary, and sometimes hard, things.

John Maxwell talks about some of these breakthrough points in his book, Leadershift. And to his point in the very first chapter, “Every leader needs to Leadershift.”

Breathing Life into Others

On the other side of the shift there are new opportunities. What you have learned will equip you to better serve to new and higher levels. The process of breaking through your breaking points will help strengthen you to return the favor to those who follow.

Think about it. Who can help someone best? Yes, it is usually someone who has gone through the same obstacle and overcome it.

You can be that someone if you do the work, get the help, and determine to grow through whatever challenge you face.

Someone needs you to break through your breaking point.
