In England, during the early 1800’s, the plight of orphans was dire. They were left on their own to fend for themselves or sent to workhouses. Charles Dickens’ story of Oliver Twist brought their hardships to light.
George Müller, meanwhile, grew up creating his own kind of plight. It began with stealing from his father at the age of 10 and landed him in prison. But as he matured, he found faith and a new path forward.
These two, Charles Dickens and George Müller, would one day meet at the orphanage George was led to build.
George went on to impact countless thousands, even to this day. It is said that, in his early years of building the orphanage, he gathered the children around the table for dinner one evening, praying and giving thanks for God’s provision. The children quietly looked at each other quizzically, as there was no food on the table. Just as George finished his prayer, a knock came on the door, and a feast was delivered, all to the absolute delight of the children.
This week, we in America celebrate Thanksgiving. May we all be thankful for the provisions we have, whether they be meager or bountiful. Thanksgiving, as a holiday, was born in hardship, when people were thankful for much less than we have today. Nevertheless, it was a celebration of life, love, and gratitude for having been strengthened to overcome so much.
We are here today because the leaders of previous generations served in their strengths with gratitude.
May we each, wherever we are, do the same.
