Organizations are living, breathing, dynamic entities because they are made up of people. As such, two things are constant: change and conflict.

A leader’s success depends very much on how they handle these two variants.

Great leaders take a firefighter approach to navigating conflict.

  • They will, first of all, seek ways to prevent it from happening in the first place.
  • They will watch for danger signs and contributory conditions.
  • If it does flare up, they will bring the tools and team to put out the flames and mitigate further damage.
  • They will rush in where others run out, in order to save lives and property.
  • After the fire is out, they investigate the cause.

Here’s a great article on dealing with conflict. The title itself is even an important reminder: IF YOU DON’T STEP UP TO CONFLICT, CONFLICT WILL STEP UP TO YOU. (Click here to read the article now.) It is all about conflict prevention and mitigation, two critically important leadership skills.
